Honey is as Old as Time

Did you know that honey never spoils? It’s been found in ancient tombs in an edible state.

In their book, “Letters from the Hive: An Intimate History of Bees, Honey, and Humankind”, Stephen Buchmann and Banning Repplier write:

“The Egyptians knew all about honey when Rome was still a village of ragged shepherds. In their magnificent temples honey was a key ingredient in many sacred rites, for it was considered a “lord of offerings”, a food fine enough to satisfy the demands of even the most capricious and willful gods. What’s good enough for the gods must be good enough for kings, so Egyptian royals were buried with pots of honey to help sweeten the transition to afterlife. Thanks to it’s antibacterial properties, pots of unspoiled honey are still being found by modern archeologists excavating the rich total tombs.”
